General Information
As part of Covington Hometown Christmas, the Village of Covington is holding its annual Home Decorating Contest! The contest, which is supported by the Covington Chamber of Commerce, encourages community pride by decorating in the spirit of the holiday. Residents who have gone above and beyond in decorating their residence in an exceptional creative approach will be recognized for their hard work during the award ceremony of Covington Hometown Christmas on December 4 at 2PM.
The contest is open to all residents within the Village of Covington who complete an entry form by November 24 at 4:00 pm. Entry forms are available for download HERE.
Entry Application Deadline: November 24, 4PM
Judging Period: December 1, 2, 3, 2021.
Winners Announced: December 4 @2PM at the Main tent at the Christmas Village – 1 S. High Street
Contest entry forms are also available for pickup on the door of the Government Center. Entry is FREE; no cost or fees apply. Entry forms may be dropped off in the drop box at the Government Center, mailed to the Government Center (1 S. High Street), or scanned and emailed to Administrator@Covington-oh.gov. All entrants agree to allow the Village to put up a number in their yard to to allow photographs of their home for the contest.
Judging is new this year, with ALL RESIDENTS (18+) able to vote on the winners!
The judging sheet / map can be downloaded HERE after November 24th. When judging (you will be ranking from 1-however many entries received) there are lots of options for your consideration:
- Creativity (originality, unique design and/or use of storyline or theme)
- Lights and Decorations (display and placement)
- Special Effects (sound effects, animation, etc.)
- Overall Appearance (effort & attractiveness)
Judging of all entries will take place during the evenings of December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. You must rank each home that is entered in the contest and return it to the Main Tent at 1 S. High Street by December 3rd at 9PM, or emailed to administrator@covington-oh.gov by 9PM December 3rd. Scores will be tallied on December 4 and winners will be announced at 2PM at the Main Tent.
Ten prizes will be awarded:
- First Place – $250 worth of gift cards to local businesses.
- Second Place – $150 worth of gift cards to local businesses.
- Third Place – $100 worth of gift cards to local businesses.
- 4th / 5th Place – $50 worth of gift cards to local businesses.
- 6th-10th Place – $20 worth of gift cards to local businesses.

RULES & INSTRUCTIONS:
Please read these rules and instructions. If you have any questions, contact Village Hall at 937-473-3420.
- Participation is open to all residents within the Village of Covington.
- Entry is free; no cost or fees apply.
- Employees of the Village of Covington as well as Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors are not eligible to participate.
- Entry Applications must be received no later than 4:00 pm on Tuesday, November 23rd.
- Scoring sheets are permitted to be filled out by any Village resident 18 and older. If families have multiple members above the age of 18, they may fill out a form for each qualifying individual above the age of 18.
- All scoring sheets must have a valid name and address of a person who lives within the Village (and is 18+) to be counted towards the final tally.
- Judging should be based on “curb appeal” as viewed from the street only. Therefore, only those decorations located on the street side of the property will be judged. Corner lots will be judged from both streets. Judges shall not enter the property to view back or side yards.
- Participants agree to have one or more photos of their decorated residence exterior posted on the Village Website and/or published in the Village’s newsletter and/or local newspaper.
- Judging criteria may include (1) Creativity, (2) Lights & Decorations, (3) Special Effects, and (4) Overall Appearance.
- All homes must be scored from the home you feel is best (1st) through the last home on your list.
- Judging will be take place from dusk until 9:00 pm on the evenings of December 1st through December 3rd. Participants should ensure that all lights, animations and decorations are in place and activated during the judging times.
- An Entry Number Card will be placed by the Village in the yard of each participant in a conspicuous place where it can be seen by the judges from the street.
- 10 prizes will be awarded per the noted amounts above to the winners. Winners may choose gift cards from local businesses listed in the amounts up to the full winning amount. An example would be that the 1st place winner could choose to utilize $250 at one qualifying business, or $100 at one and $150 at a second, or $50 at one, $50 at a second, and $150 at a third totaling the full amount.
- Winners will be announced at the Award Ceremony to be held at the Main Tent at 1 S. High Street on December 4 at 2PM. Winners will not be notified in advance but are and asked to be present at the ceremony (not required) to receive their award.
- Participants are requested to keep their house decorated through January 1st so that the community may view and enjoy the decorations.
- Scoring and final award granting are not subject to review and are considered final once declared.
